Product Summary
Please Read! There is another product, Piece of Haven, that does not have removable glass. The only difference in the two Piece of Haven formicaria is this feature. Obviously we thought it significant enough to add this version on as a separate product and we do hope you will consider the benefits of being able to remove the glass cover from time to time for colony maintenance and cleaning purposes
Features:
Removable Glass Face using powerful magnets to hold the glass in place. Silicone seals are used to protect the glass and provide a good seal around the edges to lessen airflow
Nest Dimensions: Approximately 4 inches wide, 3 inches tall (100mm x 75mm) with varying depths depending on options below
Container Dimensions: 5 inches tall, 4 inches wide, 4 inches deep (125mm Tall, 100mm wide, 100mm deep)
Professionally carved Ytong nest area
Water Tower installed
Choice of colors
Tunnels and chambers carved to your size specifications
Choice of foraging area decor (sparse)
Friction-fitted lid
Dual-vent system
Micro-screen (stainless steel) vent
**Please NOTE! This formicarium, like all of our other formicaria, are hand-made-to-order. Planning, preparation, and a lot of care go into every single formicaria, every single order. We strive to get your orders completed as soon as we can but as volume of orders picks up during the busy seasons (November through January and May to August/September) we cannot meet our normal quoted shipping times. Please order in advance if possible to give us time to get your formicaria shipped in time to meet your needs. Most small formicaria (founding formicaria plus some like the Casita, Piece of Haven etc.) are shipped within 7-10 days (some much sooner!) while other larger formicaria such as the Pioneer and Pinnacle take 2-3 weeks or longer when our volume is heaviest. If you have a need for fast delivery we offer you to take advantage of the expediting service and email us at tarheelants@gmail.com for more information about this option.
Options:
Color: Using all-natural dyes, we have developed a method of coloring the Ytong uniformly. This permanent color does not harm your ants, but actually makes the surfaces slightly stronger (not tested for increased PSI) and thus more durable than non-colored Ytong.
Décor Style:
Desert Style: White sand with several desert style plants and 1-2 rocks
Rocky Desert: Same as “Desert Style” but with 3-4 rocks and 1-2 plants
Forest Underbrush: 3-4 forest plants and 1-2 rocks. Twigs and sticks are added where possible.
Rocky Woodland: Same as “Forest Underbrush” but with more rocks and less plants. THA substrate is used (looks more like “dirt”, not sand). Twigs and sticks are added where possible.
Chamber/ Species Size:
Ants vary in size from 1mm to 25mm or more. Most commonly seen ants we see roaming in our houses (depending where you live of course) are 3-4mm and are considered small in size for the purposes of carving a nest for them. Queens vary in size and can be either the same size as the workers or much larger. A worker of small size may have a queen 3-4 times larger (or even much larger in some cases) while another species the size difference between queen and worker Is almost none. In North America, the largest ants we deal with commonly are Camponotus sp. (pennsylvanicus, castaneus, chromaidoes species here on the east coast). These would all be considered large for terms of matching their size with tunnels and chambers. Formica sp. workers are smaller usually than a Campotus species, while the Formica sp. queen is roughly the size of a Camponotus worker. These would normally be considered medium size ants but they grow amazingly fast as a colony so often I recommend large tunnels and chambers. Very tiny ants that commonly can be kept in formicaria such as Monomorium sp., Pheidole sp., are obviously best suited for small tunnels. If you want something even smaller in terms of chamber size and tunnels, drop us an email (tarheelants@gmail.com) or put a note in the comment box when checking out. Most often these species grow fast and number in the thousands eventually and the extra space from tiny chambers to small is actually necessary. Remember, you are not determining just how many workers you may have in “x” amount of time from now, but how much brood as well. Brood can (and often is) take up as much room in total space as the workers themselves!
